The events which occurred early morning December 28, 1835 on this ground now known as the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park marked the beginning of the Second Seminole War. On December 23, 1835 Major Francis Dade led two companies of U.S. Army regulars out of Fort Brooke, near the mouth of the Hillsborough River, on a fairly routine journey to reinforce Fort King near present-day Ocala. The Seminoles tracked the column from its departure and sprang their ambush on this ground at roughly the midway point of the march. In what has to be considered among the finest examples of first strike tactics in military history, the opening volley cut down Major Dade, his second and third in the chain of command, as well as numerous troops. Leaderless, the remaining solders determined to barricade themselves in a makeshift fort rather than flee, the result of that decision culminated in the near complete destruction of the entire command, only a handful escaped to report the destruction. The second round of the costliest of all indian wars, had begun.
